Before 2025, Mark Stutzman designed decks exclusively for other card producers. With a long list of illustration projects behind him, he was hired to create a poster for the emerging magician David Blaine, who would go on to become one of the greatest magicians in history.
By 2006, Blaine wanted to produce a signature deck of playing cards and invited Stutzman to take on the challenge. Although Stutzman had never designed a card back or tuck case before, he agreed, guided by Blaine’s enthusiastic coaching. Together, they introduced SplitSpades Playing Cards, which went on to see multiple editions in the years that followed. Since then, Stutzman has designed several decks for Blaine, including GatorBacks and Black Lions, as well as decks for other collaborators.
